Private Coaching — Dance & Technique
Technique is the foundation. But technique without artistry is just mechanics — and artistry without technique has nowhere to live. Private coaching with Dr. Carr addresses both simultaneously, working from the specific needs of your body and the specific demands of your goals.
Sessions draw on his training under Patricia McBride, Violette Verdy, Kevin McKenzie, and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, and his own career performing principal roles with major professional companies. Whether you are working through a technical problem, preparing for a performance, or simply trying to understand your own movement more deeply — the session is built around you, not a fixed curriculum.
“Andrew is, without a doubt, the best ballet teacher and coach I have ever worked with. His eye for detail and understanding of anatomy are unmatched, as is his ability to disseminate this knowledge. He eagerly meets students on their level, helping dancers of varied backgrounds to grow.”
— Abigail Cross, Former Student
Who this is for: Adult beginners, recreational dancers, pre-professional students, company dancers, returning dancers, and dance teachers seeking continuing education. In person in the Bay Area or virtually worldwide.
Variations Coaching & Audition Preparation
An audition is not a technique exam. The panel is watching to see if you have something to say — and whether you have the craft to say it clearly. Dr. Carr coaches both: the technical execution that earns the opportunity, and the artistic clarity that makes them remember you after you leave the room.
Working from deep knowledge of the classical and contemporary repertoire — including extensive stagings of Balanchine, Petipa, Tudor, and contemporary works — he coaches variations with attention to style, period, choreographic intent, and the individual dancer’s strengths. The goal is not a clean performance of the steps. It is a performance that says something.
“The attention to detail, knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology, and care for his students is unmatched. Whether you’re dancing for enjoyment, trying to become professional, or a post-professional trying to keep moving in a healthy way — you cannot go wrong with Dr. Andrew Carr.”
— Olivia Rick, Former Oklahoma City Ballet Studio Company
Who this is for: Students preparing for company auditions, summer intensive applications, and competitions. Professional dancers learning new repertoire. Any dancer who wants to perform — not just execute.
Athletic & Performance Training
The body doesn’t know what discipline it’s training for. It knows load, pattern, speed, and recovery. Dr. Carr has applied the same evidence-based training principles to ballet dancers, figure skaters competing at the junior national level, professional athletes, Broadway performers, and martial artists — because the underlying science is the same, and so is the standard he holds.
Training programs draw on his NASM certifications in Performance Enhancement, Corrective Exercise, and Mixed Martial Arts Conditioning, and his experience working alongside US Olympic trainers. Programs may incorporate balance and reactive training, strength and power development, speed and agility work, flexibility and mobility, and detailed movement pattern analysis — all designed around your specific sport or discipline.
Who this is for: Competitive athletes, figure skaters, martial artists, stage and screen performers, and anyone whose profession or passion places serious demands on the body.
Masterclasses & Workshops
Most programs don’t have access to a teacher who can cover ballet technique in the morning, the neuroscience of balance after lunch, and the biomechanics of expression in the afternoon — all at the same level of rigor. Dr. Carr can. Masterclasses are tailored in length, level, and focus and are available for dance schools, summer intensives, professional companies, and performing arts programs.
Available workshop topics include:
- Balance & Reactive Training — The neuroscience of balance perception, sensorimotor priming, and progressive reactive training for dancers at all levels
- The Science of Stretching & Flexibility — Evidence-based flexibility training, injury-safe protocols, and the biomechanics of extension
- Dance Anatomy & Kinesiology — How the body works in motion, taught accessibly for dancers and teachers without a science background
- Injury Prevention — Identifying the movement patterns that lead to common dance injuries, with practical corrective strategies
- Ballet Technique Intensives — Focused work on specific challenges: turnout, pointe work, jumping, pirouettes, partnering
- Artistry & Expression — How meaning is constructed and communicated through the body, and how to teach it — a workshop unlike anything most programs have encountered
Who this is for: Dance schools, summer intensives, professional companies, conservatories, and performing arts programs looking for master-level instruction that goes beyond the standard curriculum. Available in person and virtually.
Injury Rehabilitation & Surgery Preparation
“Cleared by PT” is not the same as ready to perform. Physical therapy addresses tissue healing. It rarely addresses the movement re-education, neuromuscular retraining, and performance-specific loading that gets a dancer or athlete from the clinic back to full capacity on stage or in competition. That gap is where this work lives.
Dr. Carr designs progressive programs that rebuild strength, restore proprioception and reactive control, and safely return the body to the specific demands of performance. He also works with clients before planned surgery — building the pre-operative strength and movement quality that research consistently shows improves post-surgical outcomes and shortens recovery time. All programs are developed in coordination with the client’s medical and physical therapy team.
Who this is for: Dancers and athletes recovering from injury or surgery. Those preparing for upcoming procedures. Anyone dealing with chronic movement dysfunction or compensatory patterns that have developed post-injury.
Choreography
With over 25 original commissioned works to his credit — spanning full-length story ballets, contemporary concert pieces, and festival commissions — Dr. Carr brings the same analytical rigor to creating movement that he brings to teaching it. His choreographic work has been performed by youth ensembles, pre-professional programs, and adult companies, and has been recognized with the CEDA Choreographic Award.
He is available for commissions and is experienced staging both original choreography and classical works. Commissions are discussed on a project basis.
Who this is for: Dance schools, youth ensembles, civic ballet companies, and performing arts programs seeking original works or classical stagings.
Faculty & Residency Positions
Dr. Carr is open to faculty and artist-in-residence conversations with dance schools and performing arts programs in the San Francisco Bay Area. He brings ABT® certified teaching through Level 5, over 30 years of faculty experience from pre-professional programs to university level, and a rare ability to integrate anatomy, kinesiology, and performance science into a working studio curriculum — producing students who understand their own bodies as well as they understand the repertoire.
Who this is for: Schools and programs in the San Francisco Bay Area looking for a teacher who can contribute across technique, conditioning, and science-based curriculum.
