Where Art, Science and Movement Meet

Principal dancer. Research scientist.
Coach to dancers, athletes, and performers at every level.

A Coach Unlike Any Other

Dr. Andrew Carr has spent over 30 years working at the intersection of elite performance and movement science — as a professional ballet dancer, a Ph.D. bioinformatician, and a coach whose students have gone on to principal roles in ballet companies, careers on Broadway, national athletic competition, and beyond.

Most coaches teach steps. Dr. Carr teaches you to mean something with them. Expression in movement is not magic —it has grammar, vocabulary, and learnable patterns. He decodes those patterns and teaches them.

Words From Former and current students

Andrew is, without a doubt, the best ballet teacher and coach I have ever worked with. His eye for detail and understanding of anatomy are unmatched, as is his ability to disseminate this knowledge. He eagerly meets students on their level, helping dancers of varied backgrounds to grow in group and individual settings alike. As a scientist myself, I have always had a deep appreciation for the level of physiological detail in Andrew’s teaching, even long before science became my profession. He constantly expands his knowledge base, staying on the cutting edge of ballet pedagogy and exercise science, which is a rarity among ballet teachers. On top of his technical and pedagogical prowess is another rarity: He fosters a very positive, encouraging environment in the studio. He is a tireless cheerleader in helping students to reach and surpass their goals. Even when the work is grueling, Andrew is energetic, witty, and caring. It is a joy to work with him and an honor to know him

Former Student
Andrew has been a coach to me since the moment I met him. Upon my first class with him in Charlotte around age 12, he asked if I could stay afterwards for some individualized work. My mom and I both said yes with wide-eyed excitement. I have stayed in touch through living in three different states and many transitional periods in my dance career. The attention to detail, knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology, and care for his students is unmatched. Whether you’re a someone dancing for enjoyment, a young dancer trying to become professional, a post-professional dancer trying to keep moving in a healthy way, or any mixture of those, you cannot go wrong with Dr. Andrew Carr.
